From its modest beginning as a 940-acre park atop Double Oak Mountain established by the Alabama State Lands Act of 1927, Oak Mountain State Park has actually grown to 11,861 acres making it Alabama’s largest state park. With the largest land-area, among the largest varieties of outside activities of any state park, and its proximity to Birmingham, Oak Mountain is a best stop while traveling to and from the state’s largest city. Activities
Mountain cycling, horseback riding, and hiking are three of the most popular activities at the park. With more than 100 miles of trails, visitors have a lot of options to pick from be it a brief loop or an overnight journey. The Red Path has actually even been included on the International Mountain Cycling Association’s (IMBA) list of legendary rides.
The park also includes a pump track and BMX course, Flipside Watersports cable snowboarding, inflatable aquapark barrier course, marina rentals, basketball courts, nature programs, Peavine Falls, Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, an 18-hole golf course and driving variety, 2 beaches and swimming locations, 3 fishing lakes, picnic locations, play area, pickleball court, archery variety, Alabama Wildlife Center, and horseback riding facilities. Naturalist programs, instructional chances, and bird rehab are major elements of the park also. The Alabama Wildlife Center provides rehabilitation services to hurt native birds each year in order to return them to the wild. The resident birds can be viewed from the Tree Top Nature Path, a raised boardwalk winding through a secluded forest valley. Surrounding to the Alabama Wildlife Center is the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, a 2,500 square foot interactive exhibition area and meeting space (available for renting) and class.
