His website defines it as “An experience that is short, simple, regional, low-cost– yet still fun, interesting, tough, refreshing and satisfying.” Essentially, the concept is not to worry about every experience being epic and big and requiring you to take a trip to away destinations. There are adventures right in your own yard.

Humphreys invested an entire year on micro-adventures by never ever leaving his local community. While he was stressed it would end up being uninteresting, he found out a lot of life lessons about getting outdoors and finding adventure.

adventurer podcast Alastair Humphreys is the guest on the show’s 1,000 th episode.”I had a general total experience of simply being impressed at how little I paid attention to anything all my life,” states Humphreys about his experience concentrating on hyper-local experiences and how fulfilling it was. “I did a biology degree at university, so I must know a bit about stuff, however I knew definitely nothing.”

Humphreys states he found a mix of regional fauna and flora, along with history around the location he calls home. The time spent outdoors was essentially a do-it-yourself biology lesson.
