Three-Legged Lion Swims a Mile Through Croc-Infested Water– for the Ladies

Two lion siblings recently swam farther than any other lion on record. They swam nearly a mile (1.5 kilometers) throughout the Kazinga Channel in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National forest. A drone tape-recorded the extraordinary task, made exceptionally more amazing when you think about that a person of the lions just has three legs. Oh yes, and the water was brimming with crocodiles and hippos.

The lion brothers didn’t take such a huge swim gently. According to New Scientist, they bailed on 3 previous efforts to cross before they was successful on the fourth effort. The two lions look small on the drone video compared the huge size of the channel, however they’re not the only little dots in the water. The other animals present in the channel are likely Nile crocodiles and/or hippos– both powerful enemies for a lion on the aquatic animals’ grass.

While it seems difficult enough to swim that far through opponent territory, imagine doing it with just three limbs. At one point in his life, one of the lions (called Jacob by researchers) lost a leg after ending up being stuck in a poacher’s trap. But that didn’t stop Jacob from making the cross with his bro.

And that brings us to the huge question: Why did these lions carry out such a harmful crossing? For the ladies, obviously. A minimum of, that’s what researchers think. They likely heard the girls’ call from throughout the channel and came running– or, uh, swimming.

A three-legged lion and his bro swam farther than any other lion on record, and they did it regardless of all the crocs and hippos. However why?
