Surviving Catalina Island with ‘Arthur the King’ and the Bear Grylls Academy

Catalina Island, the small resort town situated an hour by ferryboat from Long Beach, may be the last place I anticipated to choose a survival course. Before last weekend, my only context to it was “the Catalina f– ing white wine mixer” in the funny Action Sibling. So I believed it seemed like the setup to a joke when I was welcomed out there to go to a weekend occasion with the Bear Grylls Survival Academy as a promotion for Arthur the King, a film about Mark Wahlberg befriending a stray canine while racing through the jungle.

But it wasn’t a joke. It was a real event with real preparation to highlight a film based upon a real story. Arthur the King was motivated by Mikael Lindnord’s memoir Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Discover a Home. Lindnord truly was an experience athlete and really did befriend a pet dog he named Arthur during a race.

While the point of the event was to gain publicity for the motion picture, I discovered it hard to envision how they ‘d conduct a survival course for a group of home entertainment press reporters and influencers at a place known for leisure. But this is what happened.

Arthur the King

Arthur the King is about fictitious adventure professional athlete Micheal Light (played by Wahlberg) who has an insatiable cravings for experience and a steadfast drive to compete. His faults are right away obvious in the opening sequence when he ignores guidance from his colleagues and leads them down uncharted waters as he tries to get ahead of the other teams. They get stuck in a low tide and are required to give up the race.

The movie follows Light as he pursues his last possibility to win a huge experience race. To do that, he obtains money from sponsors and cashes out his savings to pay for the trip and training. Then he develops a group by recruiting a rookie and an over-the-hill competitor, and making amends with a separated teammate. The hodgepodge collection of athletes set off for Light’s final race. About a quarter of the method into the film, Light shares food with a canine. Two hundred miles approximately later on, he discovers that the pet has been following him and they become inseparable.

The connection between the movie and Bear Grylls makes sense from the start. Grylls isn’t in the motion picture, but he is present as an analyst(or possibly storyteller because the race doesn’t appear to be relayed) for the race and offers exposition. He reveals things like how Light is the most experienced adventure racer who has never ever won a championship.

Journey to Catalina Island

From a distance, Catalina Island looked more like Jurassic Park than a fancy winery and resort town. Mountains covered in trees and thick green plants jutted up from the coast were shrouded in low-lying clouds that varied in thickness and color (it rained on and off the entire weekend).

As we sailed around the island, you could see an ancient-looking dome and homes and hotels built into the mountainside. The town was packed with present shops, dining establishments, and bars. The entire traveler location– a minimum of, the part I saw– advised me of a cross in between Charleston, South Carolina, and Galway, Ireland. You might stroll the entire location in about a half hour.

Around 6:30 p.m., I opted for about 20 other media types to meet with the promotion group at an event space about 6 minutes away from the hotel. There, I met hosts of way of life and travel shows, entertainment reporters, video game and movie influencers, a couple who podcasted about Peloton bikes, and other niche media.

Although the press agents sent a schedule, revealing that we ‘d be doing things like zip lining, scrambling, kayaking, and experiencing a “survival” situation in which we ‘d need to scavenge for food, we were all not sure about how intense the occasions would really be.

Arthur the King Group 2 members after getting their”Arthur the King “pet dog. Image: Junket Productions Inc As we consumed smoked chicken, brisket, and ribs for supper, the discussion ranged from speaking about ourselves to the Arthur motion picture to our backgrounds in the outdoors, which ran the range. Some had little to no experience, others had some, and one was a licensed pilot and SCUBA scuba diver. We joked about outdoor accidents and drinking our own bodily fluids– at least, I did– and laughed awkwardly.

After an hour or so of supper and drinks, instructors from the Bear Grylls Survival Academy presented themselves by first name only. There were 3 Brits– Fraser, John, and Mark– and Sean, who introduced himself as a rope specialist and the only South African in the group.

Throughout their presentation, they explained that adventure racing overlaps with outside survival because you have to count on your wits, your skills, and most significantly, your team. With that said, they explained that the course was designed to mirror what occurred in the film, so not only would we be experiencing survival circumstances but likewise carry a canine, a bike, and a flag. What’s more, we ‘d need to work out “situational awareness” by keeping an eye out for flags and after that take group selfies by the flag for points.

Sass!

The next morning, the ground outside the hotel was wet from an overnight rain. A half-moon hung in the sky and ravens cawed from the trees above. We shuttled over in an electric van back to the venue where we consumed the night before for breakfast– they served quiche, a variety of breakfast meats, and an assortment of pastries. With our bellies full, we departed for a full day of activities.

Image: Junket Productions Inc After extending and smearing mud on our faces, the trainers expanded the idea of situational awareness. John, who told us the day would be “mega,” taught us”sass!” which nobody seemed to know if it was slang or an acronym. However it was used as a sort of war cry. You shouted” sass!”when you encountered a low-hanging branch. “Sass!” when you saw a rock you might trip on. And “sass!” when coming across any challenge or danger.

Because I was on Team 2, we practiced our sass skills while the other group went zip lining. I paired with fellow Chicagoan Joey, who was a fitness influencer, author, and periodic television program host. We were about the same height and weight, but his body was shaped like a bodybuilder– because he was a bodybuilder!

Joey and I took turns swinging our arms at each other as if they were tree branches while the other individual blocked and shouted “sass!” It was difficult not to feel ridiculous, however the idea they wished to impress upon us was the value of not simply noticing risk however cautioning those with you of the risk as well.

After 20 or 30 minutes of sassing around, it was our turn to zip line. For it, the survival instructors informed us the facility’s workers would take the lead for the direction and lead us through the experience. The two young trainers Travis and Ricky worked as a comedy duo as they broke jokes and discussed the dry dos and do n’ts of zip lining.

Do not release the handlebars.

Do kick back in your harness.

Do not “death grip” the bar.

Do pull your legs in before completion.

Image: Daniel Terrill Using harnesses and helmets, we packed back into the electric van for the 10-minute drive to the top of the mountain. At the top, the dreary weather condition seemed to match what we were feeling. The temperature had actually dropped and the wind got.

Ziplining Down a Mountain

In Arthur, Light and his team come across an abandoned zip line early in their race. They see it as an opportunity to rapidly descend an area with their mountain bikes. It is among the more amazing minutes as one of the characters gets stuck on a damaged part of the line and Light needs to unbuckle himself, dangle above 100 feet off of the ground, and climb up around her to assist.

The majority of individuals on my team were just nervous about zip lining for the very first time. As for me, I hid my anxiousness by joking. I made remarks like “At this height, the helmet uses you for security” and “The fall won’t eliminate you, however it’ll probably break your leg.” However, I was likewise the very first in line to go. I ‘d like to say I took cues from Lindnord who promotes leading by example, but I truly simply wished to conquer my fear.

Despite my sensations, I relied on the gear and the safety check. I knew as quickly as I went that I ‘d get over whatever stress and anxiety I felt. Ahead of zipping, the zip line team carried out a 10-point safety check, which included yanking on all of the connection points including my helmet. I made one final joke– I asked “How far’s the drop?” to which Ricky stated, “Don’t fret about it”– and leapt from the platform.

I liken riding a zip line for the first time to a toddler decreasing a slide at a play ground for the very first time. It’s scary yet thrilling and then it simply feels fun. As I zipped throughout the line at speeds as quick as 35 miles per hour, I got a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and Pacific Ocean. Out of the 5 zip lines, the longest one was a little more than 1,000 feet long, so it lasted about 20 seconds.

The Alpine Scramble

Up next, the Bear Grylls trainers told us that we would be alpine scrambling and after that had us count our actions so we ‘d understand our 100-meter speed. As we strolled and counted, we asked each other, “What’s alpine scrambling?” and nobody seemed to know.

A couple of hundred meters down we stopped at an area with a variety of equipment spread out evenly. We as soon as again placed on a harness and helmet. Then, we each got a brief piece of rope, and trainer Sean, the rope man, took over the guideline. He revealed us how to connect 3 types of knots: an alpine butterfly, a clove hitch, and a munter hitch.

To state Sean was merely a rope specialist may refrain from doing it justice. He had a certification in the ability. What’s more, he’s an expert and competitive arborist, so he’s constantly climbing trees and working with chainsaws, in addition to being a lead instructor for the Bear Grylls Survival Academy.

After what felt like an hour of tying knots, they provided both teams a 25-meter rope and had us decide which knot we need to utilize to connect to it. We concurred with the alpine butterfly. Then, we found what the alpine scramble was.

While tied together, we went on what turned out to be a brief however steep, muddy walking. The instructors drew up a path that went up a grade that was more than a hill but not quite a wall with ground that was soft and muddy.

the guidance of the instructors and secured sure footing along the course, we bunched up often. We didn’t move at a stable speed however rather walked and stopped, then strolled and stopped, then … When we got to completion, we rappelled down the hill. We strolled over to what appeared like a retired pool that was

transformed into a drain ditch. We were entrusted with fashioning a rope and two wood poles into a stretcher and then transferring a”wounded” staff member through the ditch while taking selfies along the method. It sounds more complicated than it was. Although they didn’t alpine scramble in the motion picture, there were a great deal of little things

that did connect. Arthur utilized his” sass “to stop others from strolling off a cliff and a colleague was injured and needed to be carried, however I think the most significant connection was unintentional. What made the challenge so challenging was that it rained hard and the wind got substantially. It was the closest thing to suffering we would sustain that day. By the end, we were soaked, cold, and uncomfortable– just in time for the sunshine and lunch! Bugs & Meatballs

Consuming bugs and scavenged food is Bear Grylls’thing. Simply begin typing “Bear Grylls consumes”into an online search engine and you’ll find a library of content. While I do not believe it’s as fantastic a team-building exercise as alpine rushing or zip lining, eating the grossest thing you can find in front of your peers is one of the greatest bends you can do. Plus, it’s pretty enjoyable to enjoy. Standing in line next to Joey, we were paired to eat dung beetles and mealworms together, which we did without doubt. Now, they didn’t taste bad. They sort of advised me of unflavored

peanuts. The ick element was the dry, crispy texture and the truth that they were dung beetles and mealworms. Still, neither Light nor Lindnord(who was participating in the day’s occasions)ate bugs throughout their adventure race. They did, however, eat meatballs. Wayfayrer Meatballs to be exact.

After ending up a leg of the race, Light takes a seat to take pleasure in the balls of meat. Arthur, who was not yet called Arthur, enjoys him consume and patiently waits on scraps. Wanting to be kind to the dog, Light shares a couple and the rest is history. Conserve Arthur! Kayaking was the last event of the trip and a pivotal moment in Arthur the King. I won’t spoil the context, but in the film, Light and his team are

forced to leave Arthur behind ahead of kayaking. The pet dog follows, swimming as far as he can in the past struggling and after that Light unsurprisingly conserves him. So we ultimately needed to attempt to save Arthur. Kayaking was the occasion I was least enthusiastic about because I didn’t especially wish to get wet, and I believed the 55-degree weather condition might’ve been comfortable on land, but not so much in the water. Despite my feelings, I chose

to instead completely embrace the opportunity and experience. The kayak instructor went through the instructions. While all of it seemed relatively simple, he stressed one piece of guidance: “If you just remember something, ensure it’s BBF.”He explained that if you fall out of the kayak, the series you must follow to

get back in is stubborn belly, butt, and then feet. Your humble author after being tipped out of the kayak. Image: Junket Productions Inc I paired up with Jeremy, who worked for Motion picture Guide, to share a kayak and it could not have been a better match-up. We were nearly similar in height, weight, and build and we shared a passion for outdoor activities. Out on the water, trainer Sean had us

race out to one end of the coastline. With our long arms, Jeremy and I were fast– probably the fastest out there(or the most competitive). We paddled hard. Each stroke reached deep into the water as we pulled ourselves across.

We were the very first to reach the end. While we waited for the other kayaks to finish, I let my arms unwind and I took pleasure in the sunlight. Then, Sean explained to the other end and revealed that our objective was at the other end where another trainer worn a canine outfit was

treading water. They implied that the group who conserved him wins. Despite our tiredness, Jeremy and I raced over. We once again paddled set. We ended up insinuating just ahead of the lead boat to reach Arthur initially. We took pride in ourselves for pushing through and accepting the “struggle. “Then, the trainer in the

Arthur outfit stated:”Are you all set to be tipped over? “and continued to topple our kayak. Fortunately, the water was not as cold as I had actually prepared for. While our life vest kept us afloat, we gently treaded water and pushed the kayak upright. Jeremy swam over to the opposite of the kayak for counterweight. And after that we made good on the little bit of instruction we received. I

pulled myself in, beginning with my stubborn belly, turned onto my butt, and then brought my feet within. I leaned over to the opposite side of Jeremy so he might do the exact same. Sure, it was a little tricking to be deceived into conserving somebody just to be deliberately pulled in. But for me, it was one of those moments where I was pleased things worked out the way they did. Although things technically spoiled because I fell (or tipped)out of the kayak, I would’ve been disappointed if it hadn’t occurred. The”Arthur the King”class after finishing the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. Image: Junket Productions Inc. I Survived Catalina Island Besides teamwork and loyalty, one of the main themes in the film is suffering. As endurance professional athletes, the characters make note of it consistently, whether they suffer through exhaustion, raw and bloody heels, or dehydration, but they state it with a smile, recommending that suffering through a physical challenge leads to fulfillment.

I couldn’t assist but see the parallel

in between that and the workouts we had intended on Catalina Island. When I reflect on my weekend experience, numerous stated they felt aching and tired after all of the activities. Everybody grumbled at one point or another about being cold and damp and how horrible it was to consume bugs. But there was also excitement and cheering throughout the day. While I would not explain the experience as suffering, I would call it a suffering sampler and a

taste of experience. Arthur the King will be in theaters beginning March 15, 2024. What took place during a Bear Grylls survival course at Catalina Island for the motion picture “Arthur the King?”Check out to discover.
