Over the night, from July 3 to July 4, Yellowstone says there was “a significant police incident at Canyon Town in the central part of Yellowstone National Park.” An individual had a firearm and was making hazards, though it’s unclear what sort of risks and to whom.

Someone should have reported the individual, and rangers reacted.

“When rangers got in touch with the individual there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and police rangers,” Yellowstone says in its news release.

The specific with the gun died in the shootout, and the scuffle left a Yellowstone law-enforcement ranger injured. The ranger is recovering in the hospital.

Yellowstone is not releasing either person’s identity while special representatives from the National Park Service (NPS) and the FBI even more examine the deadly occurrence.

NPS wants the public to know that there are currently no active risks at Yellowstone National Park. However, officials have closed the area surrounding the Canyon Lodge complex to help in the continuous examination.

We will update this post as more news becomes available.
