Marathon World Record Holder Passes Away in a Car Crash

The present marathon world record holder has actually passed away after an auto accident in Kenya. Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed after the automobile they remained in drifted off the roadway.

Several media reports broke the news after the crash late last night.

Kiptum set the current record at the Chicago Marathon when he ran the 26.2 mile race in 2:00:35. The run remained in October 2023.

“We are stunned and saddened by the news of the current death of Kelvin Kiptum,” wrote Carey Pinkowski, the Executive Race Director of the Chicago Marathon. “Kelvin was an once in a generation professional athlete at the front of his profession and there is no doubt in my mind that his greatest accomplishments were ahead of him. We were lucky to witness his achievement on the streets of Chicago. While he will be commemorated for his record-breaking efficiencies, I will remember him as an incredible skill and as a much more splendid individual. The sport of marathon running has suffered an awful loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his household.”
