Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina, rests on the state’s southern border. Expect humid temperatures in the high 80s from June to September. Spring and fall months are rather comfy, though. Camping with a big group? You can even lease the totality of the 14-acre Copperhead Island over night! Travel a bit east of Charlotte to find the Uwharrie National Forest. Pan for gold, hike the remote Uwharrie Trail, or fish in Badin Lake. If you own horses, don’t miss out on the Canebrake Horse Camp.
