Invite to Millerton Lake State Recreation Location

Visitors to Millerton Lake State Recreation Location (SRA) can experience a vast array of outdoor activities at this central Sierra Nevada foothill tank. The park lies in Fresno and Madera counties, bifurcated by the San Joaquin River channel, traversing its historic route from the Sierra Crest to the California Delta. Millerton Lake SRA is host to a multiuse trail system and to over forty miles of shoreline. The numerous thousand square acres of water area is popular with boaters and anglers. Residents and out-of-town visitors take pleasure in the temperate climate, with warm to hot summertimes and cool winter seasons. The area is the conventional and ceremonial homeland of the Dumna and Kechaye, a Yokuts Native American group of Central California. Their involvement in the park and influence on the landscape is valued by visitors daily.

With over 40 miles of coast land for water sports, this SRA uses visitors swimming, fishing, and boating. The hills surrounding the lake offer good treking opportunities. Wildlife in the park includes ground squirrels, cottontails, mule deer, badgers and bald and golden eagles. Throughout winter, the park has special boat trips to see the bald eagles.

The lake was created by building of the Friant Dam throughout the San Joaquin River in 1944. The park’s camping facilities consist of boat outdoor camping. The park consists of the original Millerton County Court house, built in 1867.

The area is 20 miles northeast of Fresno through Highway 41 and Highway 145.
