Bear Cubs’ Reaction to Seeing a Bison, Potentially for the Very First Time

Wildlife filmmaker and naturalist Tanner Haver captured a capitivating moment on film. As a family of brown bears walks through a field, two of the 3 bear cubs notice a bison standing stoically in the middle of the exact same field. As Haver notes in his caption, it’s possible this is the very first time the cubs have actually ever seen a bison.

When the cubs discover the other animal, 2 of them stop dead in their tracks as mama keeps walking. They stand up on their hind legs to get a much better look at the bison, which is brown and fuzzy but in some way even larger than their mommy. They stare for a couple of seconds, eventually attracting the bison’s attention.

As the bison turns its head towards the young bears, they decide it’s time to stop looking and move along.

Haver does not add a place to his post, but he states he movies in “higher Yellowstone and beyond,” according to his Instagram profile, and he tags the post with the hashtag #yellowstone, suggesting this encounter occurred someplace in Yellowstone National forest.

Who can blame these little cubs for staring? American bison are the largest mammals in The United States and Canada. Males can weigh approximately 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall.

2 bear cubs see a bison, possibly for the very first time, and their response is priceless. A wildlife filmmaker captured the minute on film.
