2 friends were delighting in a backyard campfire in Powhatan, Virginia last week, when a falling tree nearly squashed them. After hearing the tree’s roots splitting, the two men dove to safety in the split second they had to get out of the way.
The males, Chris Johannsen and Chad Day, told regional news that the kids remained in home while they prepped the campfire for some s’mores. As they were delighting in a peaceful minute, the unimaginable occurred.
A relatively healthy, 40-foot tree in the yard came barreling down, crushing the chairs Johannsen and Day were sitting on. In video from a security video camera, you can hear breaking noises soon before the tree falls into view. The males leap from their chairs and over a fence into the arms of a prickly bush, simply in the knick of time.
After the tree falls, a number of children come out to see what’s happened. They’re puzzled and distressed. Though scratched up from the bushes, Johannsen and Day dodged a fate much even worse.
Avoid Widow Makers When Outdoor Camping
Falling trees are hazardous no matter where you’re taking pleasure in the outdoors– apparently even in your yard. When camping, always established your sleeping and living areas away from dead or passing away trees called “widow makers.”
Inspect trees that appear healthy, too, and constantly take notice of your surroundings. As Johannsen and Day simply discovered the difficult way, sometimes you have to be prepared to act in the blink of an eye.
