< img src="https://savageventures.b-cdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/grizzly-bear-survivor-bear-spray-2.jpeg?w=1200"alt =""> A female grizzly bear assaulted 35-year-old Shayne Patrick last month while he was on his honeymoon in Grand Teton National Forest. Patrick unconsciously came in between the cub and its mother, and in the split second he had before the bear took him down, he knew he remained in problem. Though he couldn’t deploy his bear spray in time, it still handled to conserve his life.
In an interview with ABC News affiliate WPVI, Patrick explains the painful minute. He ducked and covered, trying to protect his essential organs as the bear got him. At one point throughout the attack, Patrick states he heard a pop. The bear had actually bitten into the can of bear spray he had in his hands, and it did its task.
Patrick was left in a pepper-spray haze, but he lived. He was able to get ahold of his wife, an ENT. She advised him to makeshift tourniquets for his injured legs. When help arrived, Patrick pled the first responders, “Please do not eliminate the bear.”

He composed: “The primary thing that kept me alive during the attack was reading and comprehending what to do in the event of a bear attack and being prepared with the bear spray. Though I am not exactly sure if I got to spray any at the bear, having it on me and keeping it in my hands while safeguarding my vitals 100% is the only reason I am telling my story now.”
Thankfully, Patrick and the bear both left the encounter. In Patrick’s words, the bear was just “safeguarding her cub.”
