Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and California Congressman Ted Lieu filed Home Costs 7795, or the Prohibiting Threatened and Endangered Creature Trophies (SAFEGUARD) Act of 2024, to change the Endangered Species Act, so it extends securities to applicable animals outside of the U.S.
. In a declaration, Lee, who serves on the Home Natural Resources Committee, argued that the effort was “seriously crucial to the sustainability of our community and the appeal of wildlife as we understand it.” She called the practice of trophy hunting a “highly questionable and globally unfavored practice.”
Lieu also explained the function as “self-centered and vicious, specifically when these types are already at risk of extinction.” He argued that the change is necessary “to fight wildlife trafficking and save our precious wildlife.”
Given that the bill was submitted, it’s gained 12 co-sponsors– all fellow Democrats– and support from multiple wildlife and conservation groups.
Legislators state the ProTECT Act would expand the Endangered Types Act by extending defenses to animals outside of the United States.
