According to the Wildlife Preservation Society (WCS), cross river gorillas, a subspecies of the western gorilla, are the world’s rarest gorilla species. WCS states there are only about 300 of them left in the wild, and human beings really seldom see them. That’s why recent trail-cam video of a whole troop of cross river gorillas, including several infants, is so amazing.
Cross path gorillas live along the Nigeria-Cameroon border in Africa. Historically, researchers have a tough time studying them, particularly up until the past decade or so. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) states these rare gorillas “are scattered in a minimum of 11 groups throughout the lowland montane forests and rain forests of Cameroon and Nigeria, a location of 3,000 square miles, or about two times the size of Rhode Island.”
Unfortunately, their habitat is shrinking. WWF states human beings are clearing the forests in this area, and even the loss of a couple of gorillas in a population this small can have a dreadful result on the types’ long-term practicality.
Nevertheless, the brand-new trail-cam video footage from WCS reveals four female cross river gorillas with infants on their backs. “It’s a sign these gorillas are now well-protected and reproducing effectively– and a testament to the collaboration with 9 neighborhoods surrounding the Mbe Mountains,” WCS states in its Vimeo caption sharing the video footage.
