Today, the National Park Service (NPS) announced the official facility of the Blackwell School in Marfa, Texas as a National Historic Website and for that reason the U.S.’s latest “park.”
The Blackwell School may not be Yellowstone, but this recently designated historic website is very important and worth safeguarding.
“For 56 years, the Blackwell School informed the Mexican and Mexican American children of Marfa, Texas,” NPS states on its website. “Segregated by prejudice instead of law, this school was a symbol of strength as the town’s Hispanic locals had a hard time to keep their culture amidst racist treatment and unequal instructional opportunities.”
Though when part of a bigger complex, the website currently includes 2 buildings– an initial 1909 schoolhouse and the 1927 Band Hall. NPS states both structures keep their stability and “show the original adobe structure and clay tile construction agent of regional construction techniques and the time.”
Inside the structures, there are “photos, souvenirs, and interpretive panels” featuring quotes and stories from students and instructors. Visitors to the Blackwell School can immerse themselves in the history of the early 20th century in this area.
