Kids Treking in Badlands National Forest Discover Rare T. Rex Fossil

It’s something you see in the films– a family is hiking when they discover something distinct. And then they recognize it’s something really considerable, like a rare juvenile T. rex fossil. This in fact taken place to a household back in 2022 while treking in South Dakota’s Badlands National forest.

Sam Fisher took his boys Liam and Jessin, 7 and ten years old, and his 9-year-old nephew Kaiden for a walking in the Badlands. While they were on their trek, the kids found a fossil sticking out of a rock development. According to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Fisher contacted his previous high school friend Tyler Lyson, who happens to be the museum’s manager of paleontology.

Dr. Lyson and a team of paleontologists (including Liam, Jessin, and Kaiden) got a permit and excavated the fossil last summer. Ends up, the find is one of effect. The young boys stumbled upon something unbelievable– an uncommon juvenile T. rex fossil. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science says just a handful of these have ever been found.

The museum announced today that the fossil will be on display as part of its temporary experience “Finding Teen Rex,” which will open to the public on June 21. The museum will also screen the amazing story of three kids finding an uncommon dinosaur fossil in a 40-minute documentary.

“By going outdoors and embracing their passions and the excitement of discovery, these young boys have actually made an amazing dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” Lyson informed the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

We can’t wait to see what these three young paleontologists find next.
