Situated along the scenic Connecticut shoreline making terrific outdoor camping near New Sanctuary, Rocky Neck State Park is a is a little recreation location that features white sand beaches, salt marshes, and the rocky residues of Ice Age glaciers. The park is located about 1 hour southeast of Hartford, near the town of East Lyme, with a view throughout the sound of Fishers Island, Gardiners Island, and Long Island. The park showcases a number of examples of ancient glacial terrain, including rock scouring and polishing, potholes and unpredictable stones. In some locations, the overlying sediment has been totally worn down away to reveal fascinating outcrops of banded granitic gneiss.The camping site at Rocky Neck uses 160 drive-in camping sites for tent and RV campers. Visitors can pick from open, grassy websites and wooded, shady sites. Each site is equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, but RV connections are not available. Sites can accommodate vehicles/trailers approximately 35 feet; some websites are tent-only. Water faucets, washrooms, and trash/recycling receptacles lie throughout the camping area; a dump station is located near the camping area entrance. Canines are not permitted in this park. Camping is readily available from May through September; sites are $20–$30/night; appointments accepted.The main attraction at Rocky Neck is its wide, sandy beach, where visitors can lounge in the sun, or choose a dip in Long Island Sound. The park has a number of picnic locations for household and group gatherings, several miles of treking routes for exploring the park’s salt marshes, waterways and natural features, and anglers can fish for saltwater bass, blackfish and flounder. Along the park’s western shore, the historical Ellie Mitchell Pavilion has concessions, and dining and lounging areas. The park likewise uses a variety of seasonal interpretive programs, guided hikes, wildlife watching, and evening home entertainment.
